Gallipoli

GALLIPOLI: This prison camp was located on the Gallipoli peninsula in the Vilayet of Adrianople in Thrace in European Turkey. Gallipoli was located on the west bank of the Dardanelles Strait, which connected the Mediterranean Sea to the Sea of Marmara. The Turks treated British prisoners of war in military hospitals in Gallipoli during the Allied attempt to open the strait to gain access to Russian Black Sea ports in 1915. Despite the intense fighting, the Turks took relatively few Allied POW's during this campaign.
